Dedicated coaches to help you get the best out of the sport!

A small but dedicated team of coaches at Newport is on hand to make sure all our members have access to good quality tuition whilst on the water. Our head coach Nick Salter looks after the more senior athletes, while Kev Bennett and Daryl Jenner make sure the junior squad are kept on their toes. Two coaching launches means we can keep an eye on what is happening with several crews simultaneously, and provide immediate safety cover.

Our River

Our home waters, on the river Medina, are some of the most sheltered and safest in the region, which means they are perfect for those just starting out in rowing and the gently shelving riverbank at the club makes boating quick, safe and simple. As you would expect, safety is a priority and we have various systems in place, exclusive to our stretch of the river, aimed at making your outing as enjoyable as possible.

As you will have read elsewhere on our website, our coaches have trained and prepared crews at different levels, whether novices, juniors or more senior, to compete and win. However, all the coaches at Newport share a similar ethos, believing that the first priority in this fantastic sport is enjoyment. There are some great people at Newport RC, and in amongst all the hard work of training sessions, lasting friendships are forged… as it should be!

Circuits, Indoor and Winter Training

Newport has a small but well equipped gym area to the rear of our boathouse, which includes a number of Concept 2 rowing machines, a leg press, smith machine, pull-up bars, various free weights and kettle bells. The different squads make full use of this equipment throughout the year, but indoor training intensifies during the winter months when daylight restricts opportunities on the water.

As an addition to indoor training at the club, Newport also provide circuit sessions at a local school hall. These sessions run on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 7.00pm and usually last around ninety minutes. Sessions will begin with a light warm-up squad run, followed by three laps of a fairly intense 10 station circuit and then some core strength and stability exercises. Finally a comprehensive routine of stretching rounds the evening off.
