Newport Rowing Club Annual Regatta Weekend
As affiliates to the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association, Newport RC hold a highly successful regatta weekend which forms part of our competitive season. The weekend features a senior event on the Saturday, with racing over a three lane, 1550 metre straight course on the river. On the Sunday it is the turn of the aspiring rowers from the junior ranks of the region’s top clubs. At Newport RC we are passionate about the part we are able to play in the development of junior rowing and proud of the opportunities we can offer our younger members. The junior event is held over a 1,000 metre course, with the calm and safe waters of the Medina offering the ideal venue for those just starting out in their competitive rowing careers.
Our Competitive Season
Newport Rowing Club regularly sends crews to compete in various regattas and events along the south coast, with increasing and notable successes. Rowing at the prestigious 2012 Olympic regatta venue, Dorney Lake, our ladies junior four became 2011 South Coast Open Champions in their first season rowing together. This crew won by the biggest margin recorded in any race at the event, an impressive five boat lengths, and went on to collect their trophy and winners medals from Sir Steve Redgrave.
Our young J14 boys quadruple sculls crew are current South Coast Champions for their age group, having won a hard fought final at Swanage in September. This crew also won their first ever competitive event, which happened to be at Newport regatta and members of this close team have also recorded victories in single and double sculls races. Not bad when considering that these guys have been training together for less than a year!
Our men’s junior four crew started 2014 with very impressive back to back wins at the spring pre-season head of the river events, going on to notch up two victories during the summer regatta season, against strong opposition, giving them a third.
Two Newport scullers recorded wins in the novice category at our own regatta in July, made all the more impressive with victory at the first attempt in the men’s event.
Although, as a club, Newport attends events throughout the year, our main regatta season begins in mid May and concludes in mid August. During this time we will visit venues from Swanage in Dorset to Southsea near Portsmouth, including four events in Southampton, the picturesque river Stour for Christchurch regatta, Bournemouth, Lymington, Poole and three local events at Ryde, Shanklin and Newport.
Following the conclusion of the Hants & Dorset regatta season, we look forward the annual finale which is the South Coast Championships. This event is organized on an annual rotation basis and at different venues, by each of the three rowing associations on the south coast, and gives clubs an opportunity to test themselves against crews they would not normally compete alongside. In recent years Newport has travelled far and wide to support this event, including to Plymouth, Bideford, Wimbleball Lake, Deal, Folkestone, Dorney Lake and most recently, Swanage.
Our junior members are offered the opportunity to compete at various events throughout the year, including the prestigious National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships in London, where they will compete with up to 2,500 other young athletes in various categories and age groups. Newport juniors are current Isle of Wight indoor champions in both the boys and girls J14 age group and silver medallists at J14 and J13 boys level. Our J14 boys won in both single and double sculls events at the annual Itchen Imperial Junior regatta in October 2014.
Newport Rowing Club is always keen to submit junior members for consideration in the selection process for the Wessex squad, which competes at the yearly Junior Inter-regional Regatta in Nottingham. Our youngsters have previously enjoyed representing the region in the J15 qirls quad, the J 16 girls double and the J16 coxed four. We will certainly be looking to send more of our upcoming squad for trials early in 2015.
